Building The Porcupine!

Image
Hi.     If you are here then you must care about LA Cats & Dogs and the other animals in our city.    Why do we need you here?   Two weeks ago a budget was put forth to the LA City Council Financial Committee that recommended cutting $5million dollars from Animal Services.   This was a mindboggling cut to a department which already has a budget that is to the bone.   The cut would have meant closing three shelters which would have raised euthanasia 30% of our cats and dogs in LA.     So bad was this threat that many cat and dog lovers showed up at two city council meetings and said, "Don't do it".  Their voices were successful because on Tuesday April 29, the budget committee agreed to put $5 million back in.    Great.   Unfortunately, that is not the end of our problems.   Because between May 1 and May 30 the committee will continue to hack through the budget and they will have several opportunities to go ...

The Timeline Behind the Headline! LA Animals Still Need our Help !

Image
You may have seen the headlines or the social media posts exclaiming "Success the $5 million was put back into the LA Animal Services Budget"   --Great --For those who showed up and did the work to put pressure on the city council ---please enjoy the W for the win.      But.......we are not done.    Nope.  Not by a long shot.   Things can unravel during the month of May.  And if we let up, they will.   Just sayin'.    The Timeline of Milestones for LA Animal Services Budget  At any of these dates (or in between) there could be cuts made to the Animal Services Budget.   We cannot afford to lose one dollar because even with the $5 million returned to the budget, the costs have all gone up.  Medicine, food, cleaning supplies, fuel everything that helps our animals, costs more than last year.   So $10,000 or $20,000 (or more) removed from the Animal Service budget during this process between May 1 - May ...

Your Action At PetCo, Dog Parks, Cat and Dog adoption Fairs, Vet's office... Or Just walking around.

At the Monday April 28 Budget Meeting Public Comment,  I reminded the committee that those of us who care about LA Animals will be talking to folks at Petco, dog parks, adoption fairs, etc.   I like to walk my talk..... So, this weekend I will be going to my local PetCo, which is busy on weekends.  As people head into the store I will ask them if know about the looming budget cuts to the Animal Shelters.   I am sure most will say no and some will say, "I thought they were saved"  and I will explain that nothing is for certain and between now and the end of May, the council could start peeling off the funding and we can't afford to lose one dollar.   I am bringing a print out of a map so they can see which district they live in, I will also have link to the map on my phone and I have a print out of the email and phone number for all 15 citycouncilmembers so they can take a photo of their councilmember's contacts.    Can you do the same at yo...

I am sure when historians define this period, they will call this the Google Doc Era.  I know that during the January fires I went to many google docs to figure out the best way for me to help.     This Google Doc will assist you in putting pressure on city councilmembers by:  Understanding the Budget Timeline  Finding City Council Districts  Ways to contact Council Members  Scripts to engage other people to reach out to their councilmember  Making sure a little extra heat lands on the Councilmember districts who make up the Financial Committee

“What’s my City Council District?”  “Who is my Councilmember?   There are 15 City Council Districts in LA.  If you live in LA you live in one of them.  There are two ways to figure out your council district.  If you are good at looking at maps then....   Look at this Map and find your district If you are not good with maps then.... Use Your Address  Go to this LINK.    Choose the drop-down item and pick:  ‘Lookup by Address’ Then Insert address  EXAMPLE   Here’s an Example for someone who lives at 151 Gardner.  BTW do not put in N. What is this blog --Walk The Talk For LA Animals?

If you are a pet owner or have helped any of the animal charities in Los Angeles, then you must have gulped back in March when this was the headline in the LA Times .  L.A. city budget shortfall grows to nearly $1 billion, with layoffs ‘nearly inevitable’ My first thought, was "Oh, no what will they do to the LA Shelter's budget"    Gulp.     Then I went back to my life.   I figured someone in my animal circles would get the word out if things got dire.   Cut to, last week (April 23, 2025)  I got word via  Sam Simon’s Mobile Veterinary Mobile Clinic FB post  that the proposed budget cuts to animal services was not just dire but dire-on-steroids.  If the cuts went through as proposed, it would reduce the number of shelters from six to three.   This would mean at least 30% more euthanasia of our cats, dogs, kittens and puppies.   This was unconscionable and cruel to both the animals and the...
